Frequently asked questions

What's the minimum auto insurance required in New York? +
NY requires liability of $25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident bodily injury, $10,000 property damage, $50,000 No-Fault (PIP), and uninsured motorist coverage at 25/50. Most NYC drivers should carry significantly more — we recommend at least 100/300/100 plus higher UM/UIM given how many uninsured drivers are on the road.
How does New York's no-fault system actually work? +
After an accident, your own PIP coverage pays first for your medical bills (up to your limit) regardless of fault. Lawsuits for pain and suffering are limited to 'serious injury' cases (death, fracture, permanent loss of use). PIP doesn't cover at-fault property damage — that's still on the at-fault driver's liability.
Do I need SR-22 insurance in NY or NJ? +
New York does NOT use SR-22 — DMV gets reporting directly from your carrier. New Jersey does use SR-22 after certain serious violations (DUI, driving uninsured). We file all required documentation on your behalf.
What discounts can I bundle? +
Multi-policy (auto + renters / condo / home), multi-car, safe driver, anti-theft device, paperless billing, paid-in-full, and good student. Bundling auto + renters or auto + HO-6 is the single largest discount in NYC, typically 10–20%.
Can I insure an NY-registered car driven mostly in NJ? +
Yes — but garaging location matters more than registration. If the car sleeps in NJ five nights a week, NJ is the correct rate state regardless of plates. Misstating the garaging address is one of the most common causes of claim denial in the tri-state market. We file accurate info from the start.
